Umpire Info
In addition to the INF netball rules which are available, we will be looking at ways to further continue to boost umpires knowledge and confidence throughout the season.
Therefore we would like members to join the 'Netball Orkney Team White' facebook group, also we have a few people in a Facebook group called'Netball Umpires Corner' (with 13k members) which they have found useful to gain more knowledge and to ask questions to other umpires.

Netball Scotland Affiliations
Netball Orkney has been in discussion with Netball Scotland regarding the development of netball in Orkney. We hope to drive netball forward at all levels locally and require the support of Netball Scotland to progress with this. As Orkney are the only local authority that does not affiliate all players, Netball Scotland has been reluctant to support us with this. The Committee have now come to an agreement with Netball Scotland that we will come in line with other areas and affiliate all members to ensure that we receive support from them.
This means that we will require all players that take part in any Netball Orkney activities, senior and junior, to affiliate to Netball Scotland. As this season is now at the half way point, Netball Scotland has agreed to an introductory membership fee of £10 per senior player. This will come in with immediate effect. Players who have not affiliated by 24th January will not be allowed to continue playing in our league. Junior players have already been affiliated and are not required to pay this affiliation, neither do any senior players who have already paid the full affiliation for this year for Scottish Cup.
To make this easy on players for this season Netball Orkney will collate all senior members details and monies of players and forward this to Netball Scotland. Full membership to Netball Scotland will be required from the start of the 2019/2020 season. For further details on the benefits of affiliation to Netball Scotland, please click below.
To ease this process the Committee asks that captains dispense this information to team members before your first league game so that monies for affiliation can be collected during the first week. To affiliate members we would appreciate it if the Team Captains would get each members postal address and collect money from their players, place it in an envelope with the total paid and indicate the players who have completed the payment. Please return your payment and player details to Rebecca Scott – if you would prefer to email the members addresses, please do so to senior.netballorkney@hotmailco.uk.
We hope you understand and respect our decision to affiliate our members. This decision is to help improve our senior league and have adequate insurance for all members.
If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
Regards
The Netball Orkney Committee

Senior League: Coordinators, Scorers and Umpires
Netball Orkney are delighted with the number of teams and players that take part in our leagues each year! The aim of our league is to enable all players to take part in a competitive but enjoyable game each week.
With a large number of teams and players there are sometimes a number of problems that arise. We would like to take this opportunity to remind players of a few important rules and expectations of good sportsmanship.
COORDINATORS ROLES:
-
Please make sure your team knows when they are allocated a coordinator role and arrange for a team member/s to be responsible for this. This is stated on the fixtures.
-
There should be 1 person allocated to this role, and the scorer should not do it.
-
Team coordinators should arrive 10 minutes beforehand to set up.
-
They must ensure teams are on court and ready to start on time.
-
Time keepers must give teams 30 seconds warning before the time starts. At Picky please make ensure that the far court can hear all communications.
-
If for some reason a game is delayed, shorten breaks to help. For the last resort shorten the game that started late so it finishes within its allocated time, do not shorten the game after.
-
The bag will be at Stromness for set up, however the coordinators of the last game needs to return this to the NorthLink Ferry Terminal on Monday after the game.
-
Please make sure all equipment and score cards are tidied away into bags at the end of the night.
-
It has been requested by KGS Sports Centre that players wait in the dining hall to keep the corridor free till the club in the hall beforehand exits the hall.
-
Please see attached the coordinator guides for each of the 3 venues. Please ensure the person taking on the role for your team reads this prior to going so they know what to do upon arrival.
UMPIRES:
-
All umpires should purchase their own whistles.
-
If you need to speak to a player regarding rules or behaviour during an interval, you must approach the captain and communicate through them.
-
An umpire has authority of the game and it is their responsibility to keep control of the game and players safe.
-
Umpires must check that players hair is tied back and nails are cut short before the game starts.
-
Umpires should be aware of sweatbands being worn over fitbits
-
FYI - when checking teams nails please make sure they are short by asking the player to hold their hands out nail side up. Umpires must be able to see the whole of the nails.
CODE OF CONDUCT AND SPORTSMANSHIP:
-
Players should be mindful of other players and umpires feelings when on court. Disrespectful or derogative comments or looks will not be tolerated.
-
Players must control their tempers and avoid behaviour which may inconvenience or upset others.
-
Players must co-operate fully, respecting all requests and decisions made by coaches, helpers, officials and administrators.
-
Any queries to the umpire can only be made through the captain during an interval. If the query cannot be answered at that time by the umpire, the umpire should approach a more experienced umpire for explanation and clarification.
-
Players must treat opponents, team mates and officials with respect at all times - on and off the court.
-
It is a players responsibility to ensure they remove all jewellery, watches and fit bits before playing. Finger nails cut short and hair tied back no sweatbands to be worn over fitbits.
Finally, there is a copy of the league rules, coordinator roles, code of conduct and the 2018 INF umpiring books in a folder in the bag at each venue, therefore is there is a query please refer to these in the first instance. If the query is unresolved please email netballorkney@hotmail.co.uk
If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
Regards,
The Netball Orkney Committee

Primary Leageue Final
The NorthLink Ferries Primary Netball League came to a close last Saturday in a day full of surprises.
In the Hamnavoe league, Papdale Strawberries won their first game of the league over schoolmates Pineapples. Evie Kittens won all their games which secured them runners up. Firth Vikings confidently took home the trophy as unbeaten winners in this league.
In the Hrossey league, the day started with an exciting 4-4 draw between Dounby Dragonflies and St Andrews Leopards. St Andrews Dolphins and Dounby Diamonds were chasing the lead with both teams needing to win all their games. Sanday Selkies put this to spoils with an outstanding performance to win all their games confidently against; Dolphins, Sparklers & Dragonflies. To conclude the Hrossey league Dounby Diamonds met St Andrews Dolphins in an very exciting and evenly fought match. After an end to end game, Diamonds managed to edge a 5-4 win, which crowned them winners of the Hrossey league with St Andrews Dolphins closely behind as runners up.
In the Hjaltland league, Hup Lasses won all 3 of their games, beating both Lightning and Eagles whom both were in running for the cup. The Stenness team played some lovely passages of play against Papdale Lightning, the small Stenness GS had a fantastic goal right from the edge of the circle! Although Stenness worked hard to fight back, Papdale kept their cool to secure a 5-4 win. Stromness Smashers also had lovely passages of play, demonstrated by steady and confident movement through court, they also won all their games to secure 4th overall. St Andrews Eagles and Papdale Lightning met in a league decider for the Hjaltland cup. The game was very evenly match with lots of end to end play, ending 1 all at half time. In the second half of the game both teams were still working hard to create opportunities for goal. St Andrews defence worked hard intercepting overhead passes, which were reward with goals. Despite the effort and the steady passages of play through court, Papdale were unable get ahead. St Andrews Eagles retain the Hjaltland cup with Papdale Lightning runners up.
Netball Orkney would like to thank NorthLink Ferries for their continued sponsorship of our primary league. A huge thank you to all the volunteers, coaches and parents who all support and contribute to the running of the primary league.
The next primary competitions will be the P4/5 tournament on Saturday 5th May followed by the Peedie Schools Shield on Saturday 12th May.

Our Fabulous New Kit!
We would like to thank NorthLink Ferries very much for their continued sponsorship towards Netball Orkney! They have kindly sponsored the new Orkney dresses for all our age groups - under 13s, under 15s, under 17s and Seniors. James Linklater from NorthLink presented Julie Munro from the club with the new kit last night at KGS with representation from all our age groups.
This sponsorship from NorthLink is in addition to the discounted travel they also provide all age groups for attending training and competitions south, and being the main sponsor of our Primary League. Without such generous sponsorship it would make it harder for the club to continue to operate, so we would like to thank them VERY much.

C Badge Umpiring Course
The committee listened to recent feedback from members about getting more umpiring courses in place to improve the quality of umpiring to in turn make matches fairer. We received an overwhelming response for those wishing to do the courses, however despite this, uptake for the first course has been poor.
We require 6 more people to put their name forward for the course in order for it to run. Please message us ASAP to put your name down.
Course will take place on Sunday 29th October in KGS from 10am til 4pm. Netball Orkney is subsidising the cost to make it just £35pp.

Ortak League Fixtures Issued
All team captains will have received the fixtures for the Ortak Leagues which commences on Thursday 5th January.
When we had the pre-season mini league, we received positive feedback on the smaller, more competitive groups; so we have decided to trial it on a larger scale for the Ortak Leagues this time. The groupings are based on the final placings from the previous league, and games will be 4x 10 minute quarters. We again have a shortage of court time, but in order to give every team a decent number of games over the 3 month period, less weeks off, and avoid some teams having to play 2 games in an evening, we have utilised spare court time (at KGS & Picky) from other sections on Wednesdays and Sundays at the end of the league in March which also accommodates for Senior Inter County (Saturday 18th March). With 3 months advanced notice, we hope this gives everyone enough time to plan ahead for this.
After much deliberation, we have gone back to having named teams to source umpires, and please note teams may have more than one officiating duty in one night, so please check the fixtures carefully. When sourcing someone (for any role), it doesn't have to just be someone in your team, you can ask another team to help out, or even offer to swap a scoring slot with an umpiring slot for example to share the officiating duties equally. There are 114 willing umpires on the list and 240 slots to fill, so we hope everyone will take a couple of turns and it won't always have to fall to the same people each week. The umpire list is on a tab on the spreadsheet for easy reference, as well as on the 'Netball Orkney Team White' Facebook Group. We are still looking into the umpiring courses and will keep you updated when we have further information on those.

Changes to Senior League Fixtures
We had to make a couple of amendment to fixtures for after the October Break. As you can imagine with the number of teams entering the league this year doing the fixtures in the time we have been giving has been quite complicated to get it perfect. We have noticed that some teams have had more than their fair share of 9 o'clock slots therefore we have made a few amendments to the rest of the fixtures. We apologise if this causes any inconvenience to your team but we need to try to keep everything fair for all players.
The netball league cannot happen without volunteer umpires and we really appreciate each and every one of you who take a whistle. However there continue to be issues with umpiring and we apologise to any of your umpires/players who have been on the receiving end of this. We endeavour to alleviate as much of these problems as we can but we are a small committee and depend on the good will of people to help with the officiating of games. We have received a number of concerns over the past weeks with regards to umpiring therefore when we were amending the fixtures we have decided to look at ways to hopefully strengthen umpiring across the leagues, in particular close or league deciding matches. This has also meant moving the times of some games in order to utilise umpires. We are also looking at organising a umpiring course and hope that all players that are umpiring will be interested in attending? This will help educate and build the confidence in umpires and help strengthen our league.
PLEASE NOTE: In some cases we have not named a particular person but have named the team. We ask that your team decides on your member that is most comfortable/suitable for the game in question. Alternatively your team may source someone from another team to cover this slot for you but it is your teams responsibility to cover the slot! The ‘Netball Orkney Team White’ Facebook group should assist with this. There are teams off each week now until Christmas so potentially someone may be willing to assist.
Please read the fixtures carefully. Amendments are marked in bold font and a different colour game. Due to these changes, we will now be publishing the fixtures on our Facebook page weekly.
If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
